Good evening. This is Chief Bohannon at the Eastham Police Department with an update on Hurricane Lee.
A tropical storm warning has been
issued for our area. At this point, we are expecting wind gusts of 50-60 mph and 1-2 inches of rain to affect our area beginning Friday evening and diminishing by Saturday afternoon. Coastal flooding is possible during the time of high tides so if you are in an area prone to flooding, please take proper precautions. Anyone with watercraft such as kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes near the shoreline should assure that they are properly secured. Forecasters are likening this to a strong Nor’easter. Damage to trees and power outages are possible. Although we are not expecting widespread damage from this event, the Eastham Emergency Management Team has been coordinating with our local and regional emergency management partners and is fully prepared to respond to whatever this storm brings our way. Eastham Police, Fire, and DPW will have additional staff on duty for the duration of the storm.
Along with our partners at Barnstable County, we are prepared to open an emergency shelter should it become necessary. We will not be opening a shelter prior to the storm.
Please use the next 24 hours to make the preparations you would for any significant storm. Secure any loose items in your yard and prepare for possible power outages.
I will provide an additional call with an update if the situation warrants tomorrow. Let’s all hope this storm passes by with little fanfare and we can all enjoy the beautiful weather that is forecast for Sunday! Thank you and have a great evening!
