Exemption Applications
An exemption is a reduction in taxes due to a particular personal circumstance and qualifications set forth in the Massachusetts General Laws.
Exemptions are granted for one year only and an application must be filed to receive the exemption each year. Applications for repeat applicants will be sent out on July 1, 2023. New applicants can download an application from this page, or you can pick one up at the Assessing office.
The burden is on the applicant to show that he or she falls within the expressed terms of the exemption provision. Please read the requirements carefully and submit all required documents to support your exemption application.
Your exemption application for Fiscal Year 2024 must be filed by April 1, 2024.
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Blind - Clause 37A exemption:
- Have been declared legally blind as of July 1st.
- Applicant must be registered with and obtain a certificate from the Massachusetts Division of the Blind as of July 1st or present a letter from their physician stating that the applicant was legally blind as of July 1st.
- Have owned and occupied the property as of July 1st.
- Exemption Amount: $500.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Hardship - Clause 18 exemption:
- Own and occupy the Real Estate as of July 1 of the tax year.
- Unable to pay taxes due to age, infirmity and poverty, or financial hardship resulting from a change to active military status, not including initial enlistment.
- Exemption Amount: each applicant is reviewed individually with attention given to the circumstances of his/her case.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for an Elderly - Clause 41C exemption:
- Have reached their 65th birthday prior to July 1st of the tax year.
- Have owned and occupied the property as a primary domicile as of July 1st.
- Have been domiciled in the Commonwealth for the preceding ten years and have owned and occupied said property or other real property in the Commonwealth for five years.
- Income and asset limits apply to this exemption.
- Exemption Amount: $1,000.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Clause - 17 exemption:
- Have owned and occupied the property as of July 1st.
- You must be 70 or older to be a senior. In addition to owning and occupying the subject property, if you are a senior, you must also have owned and occupied the property for any 10 years.
- You must be younger than 18 to be a minor child.
- You must have been married to the decedent at the time of his or her death, AND have never remarried, to be a surviving spouse.
- Asset limits apply to this exemption.
- Exemption Amount: $175.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Senior Tax Deferral - Clause 41A exemption:
- Have reached their 65th birthday prior to July 1st of the tax year.
- Have owned and occupied the property as a primary domicile as of July 1st.
- Have been domiciled in the Commonwealth for the preceding ten years and have owned and occupied said property or other real property in the Commonwealth for five years.
- Asset limits apply to this exemption.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for Clause 42 - Surviving spouse of firefighter or police officer.:
- Own and occupy the property as a primary domicile as of July 1st.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Veteran - Clauses 22, 22A, 22B, 22C, 22D, 22E, Paraplegics exemption:
- Have owned and occupied the property as of July 1st.
- Have lived in Massachusetts 6 months prior to entering service or have lived in Massachusetts for two consecutive years before filing for clause.
- Must have certificate of proof from the Veterans Administration.
- Exemption Amount Granted: Minimum $400 - maximum full exemption.
